Naha Air Force Base Schools and Campuses

The schools at Naha Airbase are really difficult to nail down exactly what years they existed and what grades were served. Information 50 years after the base closed is sparse. A major problem with nailing down information on the earliest schools is the fact that they realigned them so often. Especially the earliest temporary structure schools were very fluid.

Here, based on the best information we could find and sift through is the compiled list of schools. As we are able to find out more, this list will be updated.

Schools at Naha Air Force Base

Naha Elementary School
Fall 1956 to Spring 1969 **

Naha Elementary Opened for the schoolyear in the Fall of 1956. We find no evidence that it was open past the Spring of 1969. The school was housed in an area of quonset huts on the northern side of Naha Air Force Base. Initially, before Tyler opened, Naha held all grades of Elementary K through 6. After Naha (Tyler) Primary Opened, Kids that left the 2nd Grade at Tyler, would then go to either Naha or Adams for 3rd through 6th grades.

Naha Primary School
Fall 1957 to Spring 1958

This was the third permanent structure school purposed building in the Okinawa system, the first at Naha Air Force Base. Naha Primary opened in 1957. Additional Buildings were built, after the primary opened, and the entire complex became Tyler Primary School. Tyler had classes for Kindergarten through 2nd Grade.

Adams Elementary School
Fall 1957 to Spring 1969 **

Adams Elementary School at Naha Air Force Base opened its doors to students in the Fall of 1957. We have found no evidence that it remained open past 1969. Kids that left the 2nd Grade at Tyler, would then go to either Adams or Naha for 3rd through 6th grades.

Tyler Primary
Fall 1958 to Spring 1974

Construction continued at Naha Primary School. Several more buildings were added to the school. The result was a much larger and renamed Tyler Primary School.

Eisenhower Elementary School
Fall 1969 to Spring 1976 **

Eisenhower Elementary replaced, as far as we can tell, both Naha and Adams in 1969. Eisenhower was only the 6th Permanent Structure built for the purpose of DOD school on Okinawa. We don't know exactly when it closed, but, we found no evidence that it remained open past 1976. Before Naha Middle opened, Eisenhower served 3rd through 6th grades; after Naha Middle opened, Eisenhower served 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.

Naha Middle School
Fall 1971 to Spring 1977 **

Naha Middle was the last school purposed structure built at Naha Air Force Base before it was officially closed and reverted back the the Japanese people. Naha middle was supposed to be a "relocateable" modular building. The idea was, it could be constructed, taken apart, and moved. That proved to not be the case. We don't know exactly when it closed, but, we found no evidence that it remained open past 1976. Grades 6, 7, 8 had classes at Naha Middle School. When Naha Middle closed, the remaining kids were transferred to Makiminato Elementary.
