Civilian Private Schools that had DOD connected Students

These are schools that were private, yet, had DOD Civilian Kids and/or Military Brats roaming the hallways.

++ Denotes Private (Non DOD) School

++ Christ the King International School
Fall 1953 to Spring 2012 **
Ginowan City Okinawa

I, personally, knew a couple kids that went to Christ the King International School. Another civilian type school that had at least a few military brats within it's corridors. Recently, they built an additional building on their original site around 1998 or so. The year it was built is not clear, at this time.

CKIS ultimately closed as a school for expats, at some point. The year it finally closed is also unclear. The buildings, today, are still in use as a Catholic School for Japanese students.

++ Okinawa Christian School
Fall 1957 to Spring 59 **
Ginowan City Okinawa

This first location was located in Makishi, in Ginowan City Okinawa. We do not know exactly where, in the city, it was. We have no photos of the Ginowan City Campus.

++ Okinawa Christian School
Fall 1959 ** to Spring 1965
Camp Kue Okinawa

Sometime around 1959, Okinawa Christian School moved into two quonset huts within Camp Kue. The 1964 yearbook has pictures of the new Urasoe Building that was under construction, at the time. By 1965 all Okinawa Christian School Students had left Camp Kue.

++ Okinawa Christian School
Fall 1965 to Spring 1996
Urasoe City Okinawa

This is the third location of Okinawa Christian School. High up on a hill in Urasoe City Okinawa, the hill known as Hacksaw Ridge. This location is very close to Machinato Service Area (before 1978) / Camp Kinser (after 1978), right out the north gate at the top of the hill, across Highway 1 (58) and near the top of that hill. By 1965 this school building existed and all of the students were there. There is some evidence that upper grade students were in Urasoe in prior to the younger children moving there. Okinawa Christian School left this location and moved to Yomitan in 1996.

Apparently, there was a quonset hut on the property with the 1964 school building. In 1976, construction was done to replace the quonset hut offices with a steel building for the office.

++ Neighborhood Christian School
Fall 1978 ** to Spring 1994
Yagibaru Okinawa

It is unknown what year this school opened. The school closed in 1994 and the students were sent to Okinawa Christian School. The school was inside of Neighborhood Church right next door to A&W in Yagibaru, Okinawa.

++ Okinawa Christian School
Fall 1996 to Spring Present
Yomitan Okinawa

This is the 4th Location. The School started in the this building for the 1996-1997 school year.
